WalkinGent

History of Ghent

Ghent originated at the confluence of the Lys and the Scheldt. Both rivers played an important part in the development of the city. Let’s walk along the Castle of the Counts, a medieval fortress where the Counts of Flanders lived for centuries. Further on is the belfry, the symbol of the freedom of the city. The adjacent Cloth Hall embodies economic wealth. Rich merchants gained political power and built stone houses to boast their riches. And the Church too is part of this Ghent history.
